The Central Government has begun informal discussions with opposition leaders regarding the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Act, also known as the 106th Constitutional Amendment. The law aims to reserve 33 percent of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies, strengthening women’s political representation across the country.
The government is reportedly considering changes to the law to speed up its implementation. At present, the reservation will only take effect after the national census and the delimitation of constituencies are completed. While the government plans to conduct the next census during 2026–27, the timeline for delimitation remains uncertain. To avoid delays, officials are exploring the option of removing the delimitation requirement so the reservation can be implemented sooner.
