Some interesting facts are emerging about the okra (lady’s finger) available in today’s markets. In the past, even if someone bought a quarter kilogram of okra, it usually contained four or five mature pods that would not break easily when snapped by hand. However, the situation appears to have changed now. Even if one buys two kilograms of okra today, it is rare to find a single mature pod among them. Almost all of them look tender and fresh, and regardless of their size, they break very easily.
It is said that the reason behind this unusual tenderness is a special spray used on the crop. Farmers reportedly apply this spray before harvesting. Okra that would normally not snap easily becomes softer and more tender after the spray is applied, making it break instantly. Because of this process, the vegetables appear fresher and more appealing in the market.
This process also follows a specific timeline. If the spray is applied in the morning, the crop is harvested the following morning and sent to wholesale markets by the evening of the same day. From there, the vegetables reach retail stores the next morning. Although the okra may look fresh and tender, there is a possibility that chemical residues could enter the human body. Therefore, consumers are advised to be mindful while purchasing and consuming such vegetables.
